About Us
The First Fine Art Gallery Dedicated Solely to Polynesian Wood Carving
Lavaka Gallery represents the finest examples of Polynesian art, showcasing exceptional traditional wood carving by the top artists working in Hawaii. Our gallery continues the tradition of the Lavaka family who have been carving and sharing their native practice over the past four generations. Located in Kings’ Shops, we are situated in a premiere shopping center adjacent to Waikoloa Beach and nearby resorts.
Our Story
Fetuufoou Lavaka started carving at the age of eight alongside his brother Palatimani. They were taught traditional Tongan wood carving by their father, who was also taught by his father. After the Maui fires destroyed their Lahaina-based studio, the Lavakas joined forces with long-time friends and art collectors, the Florys, to establish a new space. Together, they plan to continue the traditions of the past and expand awareness of this underrepresented art form.
